TREVISO

TREVISO is a bright, busy provincial capital, crossed by rapidly flowing canals that once fed the moat beneath the town’s walls. Despite comparisons with Venice, the lovely fortified city of Treviso has its own very distinctive character.

There is plenty to see, although the town suffered much damage during World War II. In the Duomo di San Pietro (St. Peter’s Cathedral), which has seven domes, is an Annunciation by the greatest Venetion painter, Titan, who died in 1576 at the age of 99. The 12th-century crypt is also interesting for its sea of ancient columns and its fragmentary mosaics. In the Museo Civicio ( Civic Museum) is the town’s art gallery with works by Venetian artists such as Bellini, Guardi and Tiepolo.

Of Trevisio’s churches, perhaps the largest Dominican Church of San Nicolo, with its fine apse and decorated columns, is the most interesting. In the restored 13th-century Church of San Francesco you will see the tomb (1384) of Francesca, daughter of the poet Plutarch. Out in the streets of Treviso the arcades are full of cafes, and here and there you will see frescos painted on the walls of the older houses
